Pakruojis Manor, 19th century manor house in Pakruojis District Municipality, Lithuania
Pakruojis Manor is a classicist manor house that spreads across a large estate along the Kruoja River, comprising over 40 buildings. The main residence stands alongside a distillery, barn, and various support structures that form the complete working landscape of the property.
The estate was first documented in the 16th century under the von der Ropp family ownership and was later nationalized during the interwar period to serve as a school. This shift transformed the property from a private residence into an educational institution.
The estate hosts historical reenactments where actors portray 19th-century daily life, and artisans demonstrate traditional Lithuanian crafts in dedicated workshops on the grounds. These performances offer visitors a direct view of how people lived and worked during that era.
The manor is reachable by local buses or taxis from nearby towns, and the grounds are best explored during dry weather and within operating hours. The closest major airport is in Riga, from where you can arrange a rental car or use a shuttle service to reach the property.
From November through January, the grounds transform during the Great Lanterns of China Festival into a glowing landscape of Chinese silk lantern installations. This festival brings an unexpected cultural element to the Lithuanian property, contrasting sharply with its classical heritage.
