Slivnica Monastery

The Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God monastery sits approximately 5 kilometers from Lake Prespa and features traditional Macedonian Orthodox architecture with characteristic design elements. The structure comprises interconnected prayer spaces and adjoining rooms built across different periods.

The monastery was founded in 1607 and received an added narthex in 1612 to expand visitor capacity. New frescoes were applied to the interior in 1645, enriching the visual decoration of the sacred space.

The monastery preserves handcrafted religious artworks including wooden icons and carved religious symbols that reflect Orthodox traditions and local craftsmanship. These objects remain in use during services and daily worship, connecting visitors to centuries of devotional practice.

Visitors must obtain a key from a local store in Slivnica village before entering the monastery grounds and interior. Access times can vary depending on the season and local conditions, so checking ahead is advisable.

A natural spring near the monastery contains water that local tradition associates with special properties, particularly fertility. Many visitors make a detour to see this water source and experience what locals believe about its effects.
