Solunska Glava, Summit in central Macedonia.
Solunska Glava is a mountain summit in central North Macedonia, rising to about 2,540 meters (8,330 ft) with steep grassy and rocky slopes. Its eastern face forms a large natural hollow, giving the mountain a distinctive profile when seen from below.
A military post with a weather station and a tower was built near the top during the mid-20th century, which changed how people could access this part of the mountain. The installation is still present today, and its history explains why the final stretch before the summit is off-limits to visitors.
The name means 'Head of Thessaloniki' and refers to the Greek city that can be seen from the peak during clear weather. This geographic connection shapes how visitors perceive the location.
Getting there requires a vehicle with four-wheel drive, as the roads leading up are unpaved and rough. Military personnel control the last section before the top, so visitors should be ready for access to end a short distance below the summit.
On a clear day, it is possible to see the Greek city of Thessaloniki from this summit, which is exactly where the name comes from. The word 'Solunska' refers to Thessaloniki in the local language, so the peak is essentially named after the view it offers.
