Matejče Monastery

Matejče Monastery is a stone religious complex in Byzantine architectural style situated on the slopes of Skopska Crna Gora mountains. The building features five domes, with distinctive twelve-sided proportions in its central dome, and stands at approximately 1000 meters elevation.

The monastery was established around 1300 under Serbian King Stefan Milutin, followed by significant reconstruction around 1357 under Emperor Stefan Dušan and his son. These two building periods shaped the structure you see today.

The walls feature 14th-century frescoes depicting religious scenes and the life of the Holy Virgin Mary. These painted images reflect the devotional practices that shaped how people engaged with their faith in this place.

The monastery is located in a remote village and requires advance arrangement for visits. Be prepared for the high elevation and natural surroundings when planning your trip.

The twelve-sided design of the central dome sets it apart from other medieval structures in the region and represents a rare architectural choice. This geometric detail reflects the creative problem-solving of Byzantine builders.
