Салаковски езера, Glacial lakes in Mokra Mountains, North Macedonia
The Salakovski Lakes are two mountain water bodies nestled at 2178 meters elevation beneath Mount Ubava in the Jakupica massif, surrounded by steep rocky walls. The larger lake lies next to the smaller one, and together they sit in a natural basin carved into the high-altitude landscape.
During the Pleistocene ice age, glaciers carved deep basins into the mountain landscape, leaving behind these lakes when the ice melted. The lakes are remnants of that ancient glacial activity and belong to a system of high-altitude water bodies scattered across the Balkans.
The lakes carry names tied to shepherds who have grazed their animals in these mountains for generations, passing down folklore about spirits dwelling in the waters. Visitors can sense how these places remain connected to pastoral traditions that still shape how locals relate to the landscape.
The hike to the lakes starts from Crn Vrv village and requires solid mountain gear, plenty of water, and food supplies since no refreshment points exist along the route.
