The Beginenhof encompasses multiple buildings arranged around a central courtyard, featuring residential houses and traditional Dutch architectural elements dating from the 13th century.

Established in 1262 through Priest Arent van Sassenheim's donation, the Beginenhof provided houses, a courtyard, gardens, and an orchard for the religious women.

The community allowed women to maintain personal property while living religious lives, accepting members regardless of their social status or financial means.

Visitors can enter the courtyard without charge and observe the preserved medieval structures while respecting the current residential nature of the site.

The beguinage maintained independence during the late 16th-century Alteration period when other Catholic institutions lost their properties to municipal control.
