Kykkelsrud hydroelectric power station, Hydroelectric power station and heritage site in Indre Østfold Municipality, Norway.
Kykkelsrud is a hydroelectric facility built along the Glomma river that generates power through large turbines. The station harnesses the river's natural flow and elevation drop to produce electricity for the surrounding area.
The facility started operating around 1900 and was one of Norway's earliest hydroelectric installations. It supplied power to the region for over 100 years before closing in 2008.
The station shows how Norway turned to water power early on and shaped the region's industrial identity. You can still see today how this technical development changed the landscape around the facility.
The facility is located in the Indre Østfold region and is accessible by road from nearby towns like Askim. The grounds can be viewed from outside, though interior access is limited.
The station was built with Kaplan turbines, a modern technology at the time that allowed efficient use of water power. This type of turbine is still used in facilities around the world today.
