Komitet Obrony Robotników, Political organization in Warsaw, Poland
Komitet Obrony Robotników is a political organization in Warsaw, Poland, that provided legal and material assistance to persecuted workers during the communist era. The group organized support through lawyers, collected evidence and arranged financial aid for detained workers and their families.
The organization formed in September 1976 in response to state repression against workers in Radom and Ursus. It built a nationwide network that coordinated legal defense and material support for the persecuted.
The committee published an underground newsletter called Komunikat that circulated reports on workers' conditions across Poland and reached more than twenty thousand readers. These writings brought suppressed news into circulation and allowed many families to stay informed about events not mentioned in official media.
The committee operated in secrecy and used private apartments and changing meeting points to avoid persecution. Information passed through personal contacts and coded messages to ensure safe communication between members.
The committee founded the Flying University in 1977, an initiative that organized secret lectures on freedom and democracy outside official educational institutions. These gatherings took place in private apartments and brought together students, intellectuals and workers seeking knowledge unavailable in state-controlled schools.
