Comana Monastery

Comana Monastery is a monastic complex in Giurgiu County situated on former marshland, protected by stone walls with five defensive towers arranged in an irregular quadrilateral layout. The grounds include additional structures built over time, including a mausoleum constructed in the early 20th century.

The monastery was established in 1461 and originally served as a fortified religious complex. After declining, it fell into ruin before being reconstructed at the turn of that century.

The monastery preserves interior frescoes that reflect the religious artistic traditions of its era. The site served across centuries as a spiritual center that drew believers from surrounding areas.

Visiting is best done on foot, allowing you to walk around the walls and explore the different areas of the grounds. Access is reasonably straightforward, though roads in the area are not always well developed.

The site sits alongside a natural reserve that protects rare plant species including Romanian peony and blue thistle. This protected zone adds to the character of the location and offers visitors the chance to discover diverse plant life.
