Comana Monastery, Medieval monastery in Comana, Romania

The religious complex stands on former marshland, protected by stone walls with five defensive towers arranged in an irregular quadrilateral pattern.

Founded in 1461 by Vlad the Impaler, the original fortress-monastery fell into ruins by the end of the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1588.

The monastery church features interior frescoes and holds the tomb of nobleman Radu Serban, who rebuilt the structure on his inherited lands.

The monastery grounds include a mausoleum built between 1926 and 1932, containing the remains of 564 soldiers from World War I.

The monastery sits next to a natural reserve protecting rare plant species such as Romanian peony and blue thistle across 497 hectares.
