Church of the Theotokos of Tikhvin

The Church of the Theotokos of Tikhvin in Arzamas sits within Tikhvinskoe cemetery and displays classical Russian Orthodox architecture with decorated domes and external walls. Inside, the building contains religious artwork and iconography typical of Orthodox places of worship.

This structure was built in 1777 during a period when Arzamas was developing as an important trade and cultural center. Its recognition as a federal cultural heritage site in 1995 reflects its role in preserving Russian architectural traditions from that era.

The temple is dedicated to the Mother of God of Tikhvin, reflecting a veneration deeply rooted in Russian Orthodox tradition. The religious ceremonies and icon displays here show how local faith practices have remained central to community life.

Reproductions of the Tikhvin icon are kept within this church, an image that according to local tradition appeared above a Russian lake in 1383. This sacred icon experienced an unusual journey when its original was returned from America in 2004, making the reproductions here a meaningful part of that story.
