Pulau Tekong Reservoir, body of water
Pulau Tekong Reservoir is an artificial lake on the northwest side of Pulau Tekong island in northeast Singapore. The water is created by damming natural streams and collects rainwater from the surrounding forested and grassy terrain to serve military facilities and manage stormwater during heavy rainfall.
Construction began in 1977 by damming the Sungei Seminei river east of Ladang Camp. The reservoir opened in September 1979 and proved its value during the 1981 drought when it sustained the island while nearby areas struggled with water shortages.
The reservoir is located within a military zone and is completely off limits to visitors and tourists. Access is restricted for security reasons and the area cannot be visited or photographed by the public.
The water supports populations of fish and frogs while surrounding forests attract numerous bird species. The protected military setting has preserved the ecosystem remarkably free from industrial activity or human disturbance.
