Songkhla National Museum, National museum in Bo Yang, Thailand
Songkhla National Museum is a building housing collections of archaeological finds, traditional objects, and documents from southern Thailand. The rooms are spread across two stories and show how people lived and worked in this region.
The building was constructed in 1878 as a governor's residence and served as the family home for several decades. In 1982 it was restored and converted to make southern Thailand's history available to the public.
The exhibitions feature objects from the Ban Chiang period and traditional furniture that reflect how people lived in the region. You also see personal possessions of a local governors' family, showing how the ruling class lived back then.
The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday; plan about 1 to 2 hours for your visit. Most labels are written in Thai, so it helps to bring a translation app or gather information beforehand.
Several cannons recovered from shipwrecks stand outside the main building and tell of the region's maritime history. They recall old trade routes and conflicts that shaped the southern coast.
