Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Open-concept zoo in Bang Phra, Thailand
Khao Kheow Open Zoo is a large wildlife park in Bang Phra, Thailand, where animals live in spacious areas across forested hills. The grounds connect different habitats through walking trails, tram lines, and guided routes that allow visitors to see animals in an open environment.
The zoo opened in June 1978 to house animals transferred from Dusit Zoo in Bangkok. The original site grew significantly over the decades to provide more space for large mammals and breeding programs.
The name means green mountain and reflects the forested hills that surround the zoo premises. Local Thai visitors often bring their families during cooler morning hours to watch animals feed and roam through naturalistic enclosures.
The site is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with elephant shows scheduled at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM. Visitors planning to explore the entire park should set aside at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes for longer walking distances.
The grounds support research on threatened species such as the Lesser Adjutant Stork and Clouded Leopard. Visitors can join special night tours to observe nocturnal animals during their active hours.
