Tate, Art museum in City of Westminster, England

Located on Millbank overlooking the River Thames, Tate Britain spans 500 years of British art across multiple galleries with natural and artificial lighting.

The National Gallery of British Art opened in 1897 through funding from sugar merchant Sir Henry Tate, who donated his collection of Victorian paintings.

The permanent collection includes British paintings and sculptures from Tudor times to present day, with notable works by Turner, Constable, and Francis Bacon.

Entry to the main collection remains free, while temporary exhibitions require tickets, and visitors can access the museum via Pimlico Underground station.

The circular balcony of the rotunda's domed atrium reopened in 2013 after being closed to the public since the 1920s.
