The building represents a fusion of medieval defensive architecture and nineteenth-century pub design, holding Grade II* listed status since 1955.
The establishment functions as a neighborhood pub, maintaining its early nineteenth-century characteristics while preserving significant portions of the medieval structure.
This structure contains the sole remaining section of Monmouth's medieval town walls, as the other tower was demolished in 1770 for coach passage.
