Greensted Church, Wooden church in Greensted, England
The church walls consist of large split oak tree trunks arranged vertically, following traditional Anglo-Saxon building methods of the medieval period.
Archaeological evidence reveals remains of two wooden structures beneath the current choir floor, dating back to the late sixth or early seventh century.
The body of King Edmund the Martyr of East Anglia rested within the church walls during its journey to Bury St Edmunds in 1013.
The Grade I listed building retains an active Anglican parish church status and maintains regular religious services for the local community.
The dendrochronological analysis of the wooden structure dates the timber components to 1053, making it the earliest standing wooden church in England.
