Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, Military museum and underground bunker in Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, GB
Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is an underground military complex in Essex hidden beneath an ordinary bungalow. The three-level facility features reinforced concrete structures and heavy steel doors designed to withstand catastrophic damage.
Constructed in 1952 by the Air Ministry for the Royal Air Force, the bunker served as a ROTOR radar station and civil defence centre. It operated as a regional government command post until decommissioning in 1992.
The facility represents British military preparedness during the Cold War period, demonstrating the nation's strategic response planning for potential nuclear conflicts.
Visitors access the bunker by entering through an ordinary house on the surface and following a descending passage. Self-guided exploration with audio aids allows people to move at their own pace through the different levels and rooms.
After decommissioning, the facility reverted to the farming family who originally owned the land, transforming from classified military installation to public museum. Rooms that once held top-secret status are now open for visitors to explore.
