Badgeworth SSSI, Gloucestershire

Welcome to Badgeworth SSSI, a 3.08-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located in Gloucestershire, England. This site was first notified in 1954 and renotified in 1983 due to its unique ecological features. Badgeworth SSSI is divided into two units of assessment: the nature reserve (unit 1) and the northerly field (unit 2). The nature reserve is owned and managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and covers a significant portion of the site. One of the most notable features of Badgeworth SSSI is the Adder's-tongue Spearwort, a rare plant species that only occurs in two locations in the United Kingdom. In Gloucestershire, this species has acquired the name "Badgeworth buttercup" due to its association with this site. Visitors to Badgeworth SSSI can observe this unique plant species in its natural habitat. The site is situated near the village of Badgeworth and is a depression on Blue Lias clay. During the rainy season, the depression fills with rainwater and run-off from adjoining pastures, creating a wetland habitat that is essential for the survival of the Adder's-tongue Spearwort. Visitors to Badgeworth SSSI can explore the reserve handbook, which contains a timeline history of the site. The original reserve dates back to 1935 when it covered only 290 sq. metres. In 1964, Badgeworth was recognized as the world's smallest nature reserve in the Guinness Book of Records. Over time, the reserve has expanded, with an additional 100 sq. metres added in 1975 and a field of pasture added in 2002. The seasonal pond at Badgeworth SSSI is known as Cold Pool, which is surrounded by marshy grassland. Another area added in 1975 is known as Warren's Pool. The SSSI designation includes another field of pasture that is not part of the reserve. Visitors to Badgeworth SSSI can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil environment while exploring the unique ecological features of this site. The reserve is open to the public, and visitors are encouraged to respect the natural habitat and wildlife that call Badgeworth SSSI home.
