Clifton Rocks Railway, Underground funicular railway in Clifton, United Kingdom
The Clifton Rocks Railway runs through a limestone tunnel in the Avon Gorge, connecting Clifton with Hotwells and Bristol Harbour.
Constructed between 1891 and 1893 by George Croydon Marks, the railway operated using a water-balance system until its closure in 1934.
The railway transformed into a hidden BBC transmission base during World War II, maintaining critical communication links throughout the conflict period.
The Clifton Rocks Railway Trust currently manages guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the preserved sections of the historical transport system.
Four passenger cars operated simultaneously on the 450-foot track, climbing 200 feet at a steep gradient of 1 in 2.2 through the cliff face.
