Avon Gorge, Limestone canyon in Somerset, England
Avon Gorge is a limestone canyon in Somerset that runs for several kilometers along the river with steep cliffs on both sides. Walking paths provide access to viewpoints along the route, and a famous suspension bridge crosses high above the water.
The limestone here formed millions of years ago when tropical seas covered this region. Over time, natural forces carved out the gorge and early human groups settled on its cliffs.
The gorge has been inhabited since Iron Age times, with ancient settlements positioned on the steep cliffs. The landscape itself shaped how people built and defended their communities here.
The gorge is accessible via marked walking trails that lead to several viewpoints. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, and paths can become slippery in wet weather, so plan your visit during drier conditions if possible.
The gorge is home to rare plant species found nowhere else in the world. These plants have adapted to survive in the specific limestone environment created by the canyon's steep walls and moisture.
