Daw's Castle, Iron Age hillfort in Watchet, England

The castle remains include earthwork defenses situated 80 meters above sea level on a tapering spur near the Washford River.

King Alfred fortified the site around 878 AD as part of a network of defensive structures to protect against Viking raids from the Bristol Channel.

The establishment of a Saxon mint at the site in 1035 indicates its role as an administrative center during the Anglo-Saxon period.

Visitors can reach the archaeological site by following the South West Coast Path from Watchet town center, with information panels explaining the layout.

Archaeological excavations revealed a defense system with mortared walls and earth banks dating to the late 9th or early 10th centuries.
