Monk Bretton Priory, Medieval priory ruins in Barnsley, England
The remains of Monk Bretton Priory contain substantial stone structures, including a 15th-century gatehouse and a complete west range with preserved medieval architecture.
Founded in 1154 by Adam Fitzswaine, the priory shifted from Cluniac to Benedictine order in 1281 following conflicts with its mother house at Pontefract.
The monastery held authority over five parish churches and maintained extensive properties across South Yorkshire while participating in local coal and ironstone industries.
The site offers free admission daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with restricted parking facilities available near the entrance of Dearne Valley Park.
The priory retains a medieval drainage system that channeled water from the River Dearne to flush the monastery's latrine block through underground passages.
