Locke Park, Victorian public park in Barnsley, England
Locke Park is a Victorian public park in Barnsley that spans approximately 47 acres and includes cultivated gardens, open grasslands, a historic observation tower, a bandstand, and designated play areas for children. The different zones are arranged throughout the landscape to provide diverse recreational spaces.
The park was founded in 1861 when Phoebe Locke donated 17 acres of land, and was expanded in 1874 when her sister Sarah McCreery added another 21 acres. These additions created a major public recreational space during the Victorian era.
The bronze statue of Joseph Locke, created by sculptor Carlo Marochetti in 1866, stands as a Grade II listed monument and honors a major railway engineer. Visitors often gather near it while exploring the broader green space and its various attractions.
The park can be reached by car using the main car park on Keresforth Hill Road or by local bus services that stop near the entrance. Check opening times in advance, especially if you want to visit the observation tower, which has limited access hours.
The observation tower, designed by Richard Phené Spiers, features two separate viewing platforms and opens monthly for visitors to access its interior. This limited availability makes a tower visit a special occasion for those exploring the wider grounds.
