St Margaret's Church, Prestwich

St Margaret's Church is a stone building with a combined nave and chancel divided by separate side aisles on the north and south. Each aisle sits beneath its own slate roof, creating distinct sections along the length of the structure.

The building was constructed between 1849 and 1852 during the Victorian era. A major fire in 1985 damaged the structure, leading to significant restoration efforts that followed.

The churchyard holds the memory of asylum patients whose graves remain unmarked and unidentified. These quiet burials reflect a period when such individuals occupied a forgotten place in society.

The church is located on Bury New Road in Prestwich and can be easily accessed from the main thoroughfare. Regular services are held, and visitors should understand that as a protected monument the building has specific conservation requirements.

The bell turret at the east end of the north aisle displays crocketed pinnacles at both ends, features of Victorian Gothic design. These ornamental details were part of a deliberate 19th century trend that revived medieval aesthetic principles.
