St George's Church, Gravesend, Anglican church in Gravesend, England
St George's Church rises near the end of Gravesend High Street, showing classical elements from its construction during the early eighteenth century. The interior opens under a vaulted roof, while rows of pews fill the main space facing the altar area to the east.
A medieval church from 1497 stood here before the 1731 rebuilding replaced it under the program for new churches during Queen Anne's reign. The reconstruction brought the classical forms visible today in the facade and layout.
The name honors Saint George, patron of England, whose connection to the site remains visible today. On Sundays, members of the congregation gather for evening worship that forms a steady part of local life.
Visitors can join Sunday evening services at 6 PM, which alternate between evening worship and communion throughout the month. The entrance stands on the High Street and offers access to the main hall without steps at the main portal.
Beneath the chancel rest the remains of Pocahontas, who died in Gravesend in 1617, though the exact burial spot was lost during reconstruction. Visitors today find a memorial inside recalling her connection to the site.
