St Mary's Church, Burford

St Mary's Church is a medieval parish church in Burford with a west tower, a nave topped by a south porch, and a chancel adjoining a north vestry. The stone structure displays both Norman and Gothic architectural features throughout its design.

The chancel dates back to 1150, while the nave and tower were constructed in the 1300s. This expansion transformed it from a simple Norman foundation into a more ambitious Gothic structure.

Inside you find many monuments to the Cornwall and Rushout families, created by renowned sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott and others. These memorials show how important local families left their mark on the church over time.

A medieval carved cross stands in the churchyard with detailed stone carvings of the Crucifixion and Nativity scenes. This cross earned its own Grade II listed status due to its artistic and historical importance.
