St Mary's Church, Medieval church in Cilcain, United Kingdom.
St Mary's Church is a medieval church in Cilcain built with limestone rubble walls, red sandstone accents, and a slate roof topped with distinctive red ridge tiles. Inside, the structure features an intricate hammer-beam roof above the nave typical of English Gothic design.
The church was first documented in 1291, and a fire in 1532 caused significant damage to the north nave. Reconstruction work followed in 1746, marking a key period of restoration and renewal.
The east window shows restored 16th-century stained glass with scenes of the Crucifixion, the Virgin, and St John. These works reflect the artistic traditions valued by the Welsh faith community.
The church is located in Flintshire and remains open during daylight hours with accessible facilities and level access to main areas. Visitors should expect some uneven floors in the oldest sections and wear appropriate clothing for a quiet, contemplative setting.
The hammer-beam roof displays carved angels suspended above the nave since 1535, showcasing intricate Gothic craftsmanship. This rare example of detailed woodcarving and Welsh ecclesiastical skill is seldom found in this form today.
