St Laurence's Church, Norwich, Medieval church in Norwich, England
St Laurence's Church is a medieval parish church in Norwich with a three-stage west tower approximately 112 feet (34 meters) tall, featuring diagonal buttresses and an arched entrance decorated with carved stone details. The building displays characteristic English Gothic architecture throughout its structure.
Construction began in 1460 and the main structure was completed by 1472, though work on the tower and choir continued for decades afterward. This building period reflected a time of significant church construction across Norwich.
Inside, you can see a 15th-century baptismal font and medieval stained glass windows incorporated into mosaics throughout the space. The walls near the altar display decorative paintings from the early 1900s depicting saints.
The church sits on a steep slope, so visitors need to climb 12 steps to reach the churchyard and then additional steps to enter the building. Comfortable shoes are recommended given the elevation changes you will encounter.
The church contains six bells, with the oldest cast in 1356, making it one of the earliest surviving church bells in the Norwich area. This collection offers a direct link to centuries of worship and community gatherings at the site.
