St Osyth's Priory, Augustinian priory in St Osyth, England

The stone buildings of St Osyth Priory include a late 15th-century gatehouse decorated with ornate flint work and extensive medieval structures spread across the estate.

Founded in 1120 by Richard de Belmeis, Bishop of London, the priory remained an influential Augustinian institution until its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1539.

The site carries the name of Saint Osyth, an Anglo-Saxon princess who established the first religious community there and was martyred by Danish invaders.

The priory complex contains multiple Grade I listed buildings and gardens, with guided tours available through advance reservation from spring through autumn.

After carrying her severed head to the church door following her execution, Saint Osyth's ghost reportedly appears annually on October 7th near the priory grounds.
