Jaywick Martello Tower
Jaywick Martello Tower, Fortification tower in Jaywick, England.
Jaywick Martello Tower is a circular fortification with roughly 10 meters in height, built from approximately 750,000 clay bricks with walls several meters thick. Its compact design was engineered to withstand cannon fire from the sea and provide strong coastal defense.
The tower was built in 1809 as one of 29 similar coastal fortifications along eastern England to defend against Napoleonic invasion threats. These structures represented an important defensive strategy during that period of European conflict and war at sea.
The tower now serves as a cultural venue with temporary art displays and historical weapon replicas on its ground floor. These exhibitions help visitors understand the building's original military purpose and its transformation over time.
The tower is open to visitors who can climb through its multiple levels and explore the interior layout. The site has nearby parking available, making it easy to visit and spend time exploring the surrounding coastal area.
The original cannon mounting points on the roof remain visible even though the actual cannons were removed long ago. These physical traces offer a tangible reminder of how the structure once functioned as an active military installation.
