The Bishop's Eye stands three stories high with copper flat roof, featuring two flanking turrets and intricate stone carvings on its west elevation.
Bishop Thomas Bekynton commissioned the construction of this entrance gateway to the Bishop's Palace in 1451 for a cost of 133 pounds.
The structure functions as a passage between Market Place and the Liberty of St Andrew, connecting the public area with the cathedral precinct.
Located at coordinates 51.2095°N and -2.64467°W, the structure maintains its original timber gates dating from the eighteenth century.
Joseph Mallord William Turner included this architectural element in his 1785 drawings, documenting the detailed medieval craftsmanship of Somerset.
