St John's Church, Wigan, Grade II* listed Catholic church in Wigan, England
St John's Church is a Catholic church in Wigan with a nine-bay nave flanked by north and south aisles. Cast iron columns support the structure and also carry three internal galleries that provide extra seating for worshippers.
The church was founded in the early 19th century and quickly became a place of worship for the local Catholic community. Religious orders first managed the building before control passed to the Archdiocese of Liverpool during the 20th century.
The church served a Catholic community and was designed with internal galleries to accommodate many worshippers at once. This layout shows how the space was built to gather people together for religious practice.
The church is spacious enough to welcome many visitors, and the multiple galleries offer different viewing angles of the altar. The layout with a central nave and side aisles makes it easy to navigate the interior.
The altar is crowned with a wooden tempietto, a small dome-like structure that represents a rare example of early Catholic church design in England. This distinctive architectural element draws the eye and creates a special focal point within the church.
