Equestrian statue of William III, 18th-century bronze monument in Cathedral Square, Glasgow, United Kingdom
The equestrian statue depicts William III wearing Roman attire while mounted on a horse, standing prominently in Cathedral Square since 1926.
James Macrae financed this bronze sculpture in 1735, which was initially placed in front of the Tontine Hotel in Trongate before relocating to its current position.
The statue represents William III of England, who secured Protestant succession and became a central figure in British constitutional monarchy.
The monument stands at the intersection of Cathedral Square and High Street, near Glasgow Cathedral and St Mungo Museum of Religious Life.
The horse's tail incorporates a ball and socket joint mechanism, designed specifically to prevent damage during periods of social unrest.
