Lady Well, Holy well and monument near Glasgow Necropolis, Scotland
Lady Well is a holy spring located at the end of Ladywell Street against the western wall of Glasgow Necropolis next to Tennent's Brewery. The site sits at the convergence of Wishart Street, Drygate, and Ladywell Street, marked by directional signs for visitors.
This medieval spring existed before Glasgow was founded and was used by Romans during construction of the Antonine Wall. It remained active until the early 20th century before later restorations extended its history.
The well honors the Virgin Mary, and visitors have long left coins as offerings into its waters. This custom reflects a tradition where people brought their prayers and hopes to this sacred spot.
The well is easy to find at the intersection of three streets and is marked by directional signs. Visiting during daylight hours helps you better appreciate the site and its location next to the cemetery.
The well structure underwent multiple reconstructions by the Merchants House in 1836 and 1874, then again by Tennent's Brewery in 1983. These repeated renovations show how important this landmark remained to Glasgow's community across centuries.
