Julian's Bower

The first documented mention of this turf maze dates from 1697 when historian Abraham de la Pryme documented it and suggested potential Roman origins.

Local traditions connect the maze to fertility rituals, with its alternate name Gillian's Bore reflecting its role in historical courtship ceremonies.

The maze path extends approximately 400 meters to reach the center, despite the overall structure measuring only 13.5 meters in diameter.

The design appears on various local architectural elements throughout Alkborough, including boundary stones, church features, and cemetery headstones.
