SS Appam, Historic steamship in Belfast, United Kingdom.
The SS Appam measured 425 feet in length and 57 feet in beam, with a gross register tonnage of 7,781, constructed by Harland & Wolff.
On January 15, 1916, German raider SMS Möwe captured the SS Appam during World War I while traveling from Dakar to Plymouth with 301 people aboard.
The vessel became central to a Supreme Court case that established precedents regarding the rights of belligerent nations to store captured vessels in neutral ports.
The British & African Steam Navigation Company, under Elder Dempster Shipping Limited, operated this steamship for commercial transport between African and British ports.
After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of British ownership on March 6, 1917, the ship received a temporary name change to SS Mandingo.
