Leaning Tower of Niles
Leaning Tower of Niles, Concrete replica tower in Niles, Illinois, United States
The Leaning Tower of Niles is a half-scale reproduction of the famous slanted tower in Tuscany, built from steel-reinforced concrete in a suburb of Chicago. The structure tilts noticeably to one side and displays a bell chamber at the top with several historic bronze bells.
A local businessman commissioned the construction in 1934 to store water while also creating an eye-catching landmark for his nearby business. The facility was later retired and has served purely as a community landmark for decades.
The tower takes its name from the neighborhood and recalls the large community of Italian immigrants who once settled in this area. Visitors today see a park surrounding the structure that serves as a gathering spot for local events.
The landmark stands at a busy street intersection and can be viewed from outside at any time. Parking is available in the immediate surroundings, and access on foot is straightforward.
The bells hanging in the upper section came from a small northern Italian town centuries ago and were later shipped to America. Their sound recalls craft traditions that barely survive today.
