The Taras Shevchenko Memorial features a 14-foot bronze statue mounted on a granite base with a stone relief depicting Prometheus at its foundation.

The memorial, sculpted by Leo Mol and dedicated in 1964 by President Dwight Eisenhower, represents a milestone in Ukrainian-American cultural recognition.

The monument honors Taras Shevchenko, who created over 200 poems and 1000 artworks while advocating for Ukrainian independence through literature and art.

Located at the intersection of 22nd, 23rd, and P Streets NW, the memorial stands within Ukrainian Independence Park and remains open for public visits.

The dedication ceremony drew 35,000 participants, making it one of the largest gatherings for a memorial inauguration in Washington D.C. history.
