Kloster Escherde, Benedictine monastery in Gronau, Germany
The Kloster Escherde monastery maintains an extensive stone wall perimeter enclosing the main buildings and a baroque church with barrel vaults.
Founded in 1203 by Lippold von Escherde, the monastery relocated to its current location in 1236 and underwent reconstruction after a fire in 1641.
The monastery church of St. Mary served as a parish church for Catholic estate workers and residents from neighboring villages in the 18th century.
The monastery complex includes preserved historical structures with six-section vaulted spaces and remains accessible as a state property since 1838.
The site features architectural designs by Giuseppe Crotogino, including a baroque church completed in 1685 and a gatehouse added in 1709.
