Lübeck synagogue, Jewish religious building in Old City, Lübeck, Germany
The red brick synagogue stands set back from St. Annen Street, featuring architectural elements of the Moorish Revival style with mosque-like details.
Built in 1880, the synagogue remained active until November 1938, when the local Jewish community dissolved during the Nazi period in Germany.
This religious structure represents the presence of Jewish life in Lübeck, where the community established itself following changes in residential regulations during the 1800s.
The synagogue lies within walking distance of other medieval buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lübeck's Old City.
The building survived World War II because of its location next to a museum, which German forces decided not to damage during the conflict.
