Riddagshausen Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Brunswick, Germany

The abbey church of Riddagshausen presents a cross-shaped floor plan with high vaulted ceilings and massive stone walls typical of medieval architecture.

Founded in 1101 by Ludolf the Wend, a steward of Henry the Lion, the monastery received its name from the neighboring village of Riddagshausen.

The monastery houses the Cistercian Museum, which exhibits artifacts and documents reflecting the daily routines and spiritual practices of medieval monks.

Visitors can access the abbey grounds daily from sunrise to sunset, with guided tours available at the museum between Tuesday and Sunday.

The former monastery grounds include a nature reserve named Riddagshäuser Teiche, which serves as a protected habitat for numerous bird species.
