Lodbjerg Lighthouse
Lodbjerg Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Thisted Municipality, Denmark
The granite tower stands 35 meters tall atop a 13-meter moraine hill in the center of Thy National Park. The cylindrical structure features whitewashed exterior walls with a red lantern house. The location provides sweeping views across dune landscapes, heathland and the North Sea coastline. A small exhibition space inside documents lighthouse technology and local seafaring history.
The installation commenced operations in 1883 using petroleum fuel, replacing earlier provisional navigation aids along the coast. Conversion to electric power occurred in 1932 as part of comprehensive technical modernization. During the Second World War, German occupation forces attempted to construct a connecting tunnel to a nearby bunker. Automated remote control was introduced in the late 1970s.
This structure serves as an official heritage monument while maintaining active duty in maritime navigation along Denmark's North Sea coast. Local communities regard the tower as a symbol of regional seafaring traditions and the historical importance of coastal shipping. The site attracts photographers and nature enthusiasts who appreciate its exposed position within the national park boundaries.
Visitors can enter the grounds daily between 7:00 and 21:00, with an admission fee of 30 DKK (approximately $4.50) providing access to interior spaces and exhibition. Approach via gravel roads through dune terrain, with parking available within short walking distance. Spring and autumn offer optimal conditions for bird watching. Windproof clothing is recommended due to the exposed location.
During the Second World War, construction attempts for a tunnel between the tower and bunker destabilized the foundation, causing the structure to develop a slight lean. This tilt measures just a few degrees but remains measurably visible to observant visitors. Engineers decided against corrective measures as structural integrity was not compromised.
