Højbro Plads 15, Neoclassical building in Copenhagen, Denmark
Højbro Plads 15 is a Neoclassical building in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It has a white upper facade with two rows of five windows each, a dark tiled roof with dormers, and a greyish-pink ground floor with shopfronts and a sign for HøjbRO C Sandwich & Cafe.
The building was constructed in 1797 for restaurateur Johan Mortensen Eisen, as part of the rebuilding after the Copenhagen Fire of 1795. It was listed as a protected building in 1950 and has undergone changes, including a new cornice in 1886.
The name Karberghus appears on the facade, reflecting the current owner, and the ground floor has long housed shops and cafes. The square outside is a gathering place where locals and visitors pass by, and the building contributes to the lively street life of the area.
The building sits on Højbro Plads, a square in the heart of Copenhagen, easily reached on foot from nearby streets and canals. Visitors can admire the facade from the square, but the interior is not open to the public as it houses offices and apartments.
The composer Emil Horneman lived here in 1850-51, and he composed the melody for the Danish Christmas song 'Højt fra træets grønne top'. The building's facade features a band with the name Karberghus, added by a later owner.
