Archaeological Ensemble of Tárraco, Roman archaeological complex in Tarragona, Spain
The archaeological site spans 70 hectares, featuring preserved structures including walls, towers, an amphitheater, a circus, and a theater nestled on hillside terraces.
Founded in 218 BCE by Scipio during the Second Punic War, Tarraco became the capital of Hispania Citerior province and the first Roman settlement in Spain.
The amphitheater, which accommodated 14,000 spectators, witnessed the martyrdom of Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius in 259 CE.
Visitors can explore 1,100 meters of preserved Roman walls, reaching heights of 12 meters and containing three towers and five small gates.
The site demonstrates Roman urban planning through artificial terraces that follow natural terrain, including a circus that held 23,000 spectators for chariot races.
