Balcó del Mediterrani, Scenic viewpoint at Rambla Nova, Tarragona, Spain
The Balcó del Mediterrani is a viewpoint at the end of Rambla Nova in Tarragona, Spain, offering a wide view over the Mediterranean Sea. The Art Nouveau wrought iron railing runs along the cliff edge and frames the sight of the coastline, harbor, and Roman ruins below.
Ramon Salas i Ricomà designed the iron railing in 1889 during a period when Tarragona was reshaping its waterfront area. The railway line was later moved beneath the cliff, creating the promenade that now leads to the overlook.
Visitors tap the railing with their hand when approaching the edge, following a local custom believed to bring good fortune. This ritual has passed through generations and is practiced by both locals and travelers visiting the overlook for the first time.
The area is easily reached on foot from Rambla Nova and is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Early morning or late afternoon offers quieter moments to enjoy the view without larger crowds.
At the base of the cliff, a small garden shapes the letter T of Tarraco and the city shield through carefully trimmed plants and stone. This design is fully visible only from the elevated position of the overlook and reveals a detail many visitors miss.
