Dundarg Castle, Medieval castle ruins at Aberdour Bay, Scotland
The remains of Dundarg Castle stand on a triangular plateau above sandstone cliffs that rise twenty meters above Aberdour Bay.
Built in the 13th century by the Comyn family, the castle underwent reconstruction in 1334 before being captured during a siege by Sir Andrew Moray.
The name Dundarg originates from Gaelic words meaning red fort, reflecting the distinctive color of local sandstone used in its construction.
The inner gatehouse remains the most substantial structure at eighteen feet tall, while other sections reveal multiple archaeological layers from different periods.
The castle forms part of the Nine Castles of Knuckle, a collection of fortifications along the rocky headlands of North-East Aberdeenshire.
