Pitsligo Castle, Medieval castle ruin near Rosehearty, Scotland.
Pitsligo Castle is a castle ruin in Aberdeenshire with a central keep of thick stone walls containing three vaulted levels. A northeastern stair tower and defensive drum tower accompany the main structure, with a walled garden to the north and an enclosure to the west.
The castle was built as a keep in 1424 and underwent modifications in the 1570s by the Forbes family. Later the structure suffered severe damage from military action.
Stone plaques on the walls display the heraldry of families who held this place over time. These carvings tell you about the people who called this castle home across the centuries.
Access to the site is on foot with limited parking nearby. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven, particularly around and inside the ruins.
This site is counted among nine castles spread along a rocky headland in northeast Scotland. This cluster of defensive structures on a dramatic coastline gives the region historical depth.
