Church of St Mary de Castro, Leicester, Medieval church building in Castle Yard, Leicester, England
The church features Norman architectural elements, including intricate stonework designs, robust stone walls, and a three-manual pipe organ from 1860.
Founded in 1101 within Leicester Castle grounds, the church served as a collegiate establishment with a dean and twelve canons until 1548.
The building holds connections to notable figures, as Geoffrey Chaucer married Philippa Roet here in 1366, and Henry VI knighted 44 persons in 1426.
Located at coordinates 52.6323, -1.1404, the church reopened to visitors in April 2015 after repairs, though the spire remains incomplete.
The name 'de Castro' stems from Latin, distinguishing it from another St Mary church called 'de Pratis' meaning 'of the meadows' in Leicester.
