St Peter's Church, Sandwich, Grade I listed church building in Sandwich, England
St Peter's Church is a Gothic building with a distinctive three-stage tower rising above the town. The tower features round-headed windows, bell openings, clock faces, and a square domed cupola topped with a spire.
The church was built around 1100 on Norman foundations and later reconstructed in the 13th century following French raids. After destruction during an attack in 1216, the building was rebuilt and reinforced.
Huguenot refugees from the Low Countries found shelter here and left their mark on the building's character. You can see how this community shaped the space and its role in local life.
You can visit during daytime hours and enjoy the architecture from outside. Take time to notice the tower details and explore the surroundings in the historic old town.
Beneath the chancel lies an underground chamber that originally functioned as a repository for bones. It was used to store skeletal remains to create space for new burials in the churchyard.
