Royal Foundation of St Katharine, Medieval church building near Tower of London, England
The Royal Foundation of St Katharine operates as a religious charity with conference facilities and retreat spaces in Limehouse, East London.
Queen Matilda established the foundation in 1147 as a hospital and church, dedicating it to the memory of her two children.
The institution received a Charter of Privileges in 1442, granting it independent governance separate from London's jurisdiction for its 23-acre precinct.
The foundation relocated from its original location near the Tower of London to Regent's Park in 1825, before settling in Limehouse in 1948.
For over 875 years, queens of England maintained patronage of this institution, following Queen Eleanor's charter of 1273.
